Focusing on the positive effects of Trap culture with Skype T

Meet Thabang ‘Skype T’ Mathole, an Elandsfontein hip-hop artist with big dreams of one day becoming a platinum-selling artist and a savvy businessman like his idols Ice Cube and Cassper Nyovest.

Inspired by American rapper, Ice Cube, to create music, Thabang ‘Skype T’ Mathole (21), from Elandsfontein, is ready to release his EP (extended play) titled Live Young Live Free this year.

Thabang was previously closely associated with Toxic Records under which he released his first track Keep Stunnin’.

“I can confidently say my lyrical content has matured from when I ventured into rapping in 2014,” said Thabang.

From Toxic Records he worked with another local record label, Sequence Records, and ultimately found his voice when he was introduced to Simphiwe ‘Emcee S Master’ Mtshali, the founder of Three Million Records in 2017.

“Simphiwe gave me enough room to grow, and while working with him I developed a knack for other genres as well, thus becoming a versatile rapper,” said Thabang.

“I later found myself wanting to branch out from Three Million Records, last year, to become an independent artist and to focus on my clothing brand, Skype T, which had just started gaining traction on social media.”

Skype T apparel offers hoodies, sweatpants, jackets, beanies and caps.

Thabang, who has been caught on the wave of Trap music like most boys his age, said he is focused on the positive side of Trap music, which is making money from his craft, not spending money on illegal substances associated with the culture of Trap.

“Cassper Nyovest is a great influence in my life, I follow the moves he follows when it comes to creating music,” he said.

“Even with my brand, Skype T, I follow the same marketing trends he does for Family Tree Records and I believe in doing so I will be successful.”

Although trying to find a balance between running his clothing label and producing music has been a challenge, the support from his younger sister Mokgadi Mathole, reassures him of his talents and that he is destined for greatness.

“She believes in me and on my lowest days she’s there to cheer me up, she knows all my business moves and gives great advice on what I should be rapping about,” he said.

To honour his sister, Thabang is set to release his EP on her birthday later this year on October 26.
