Yearling sales a success despite tough economic climate

Trade at the Emperors Palace National Yearling Sale remained solid despite a tough economic climate.

A selection of South Africa’s top fillies and colts went under the hammer at the annual Emperors Palace National Yearling Sale.

The annual event, which is a must on the racing calendar, was held from April 24 to 26 at Bloodstock South Africa’s (BSA) sales complex in Gosforth Park.

The sale came to an end after a day of solid trading on Friday, and while there were slight declines in the statistics for 2019, the overall aggregate of R139 030 000 was very much on par with the figure achieved last year (last year’s aggregate was R140 345 000).

A handsome clearance rate of over 80 per cent was also a great takeaway from this year’s sale, which saw the average price drop from R362 649 to R320 346 and the median fall from R200 000 to R175 000.

The record for a top-priced yearling sold in South Africa was smashed on the first day of trading when the regally bred bay colt, Masaki, from Wilgerbosdrif, was knocked down for the staggering sum of R9-million.

In what proved a protracted bidding duel, Masaki was eventually knocked down to Mike de Kock, who purchased the colt on behalf of Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid al Maktoum.

Annual National Two Year Old Sale a success

This year’s sale saw more than 20 yearlings being sold for R1-million or more.

BSA’s Gary Grant was realistic about the sale’s overall results.

“The results of the Emperors Palace National Yearling Sale are an accurate reflection of the uncertain political and economic political situation at the moment,” he said.

“We remain very grateful for the ongoing support from a number of major international buyers and once again thank the vendors for the high-quality drafts they had on offer at the sale.”

Form Bloodstock topped the buyers list, purchasing 32 yearlings for a gross amount of R18 365 000, while Wilgerbosdrift, who sold 23 of their 27 lots on offer, headed the vendors table, selling their yearlings for R17 645 000.

Multiple champion sire Silvano was the leading sire, by aggregate, at the sale with the triple G1 winning son of Lomitas selling 20 yearlings for R20 180 000.
