New records set at Central Gauteng Masters Athletics Championships

Athletes charge into action at the Central Gauteng Masters Athletics Championships and set new records.

The Central Gauteng Masters Athletics Championships event held at Germiston Stadium recently was a staggering showdown, that saw six South African records smashed.

About 248 athletes entered the championships and delivered some of the best performances of the season.

Two new records were made in the pole vault event.

Forty-year-old Ida-Marie Strydom, who had just returned from a successful 2019 World Masters Athletics Indoor Championships in Torun, Poland, where she took bronze with a height of 3.18m, improved on her own women 40 to 44 years old South African Outdoor record of 3.10m, with a leap of 3.30m in Germiston.

In action in the hammer throw final for women over 60 is Suzi van Eck from Pretoria.

Jean-Michel de Senneville (71) improved the men’s pole vault record with his jump of 2.70m.

De Senneville has just joined South African Masters Athletics (SAMA) and has a career best performance of 3.20m.

Marié Strydom in the 50m sprint using all her might to beat her opponents in a special children’s race at the Central Gauteng Masters Athletics Championships held recently at Germiston Stadium.

With a time of 16.79 seconds, Johan Gouws cruised into first place in the men 60 years old 100m hurdles.

Hans Miekautsch took first place in the men’s 80m hurdles, in a time of 19.99 seconds.

Mariette Botha jumped a winning height of 1.69m in the women’s 35 years old high jump at the Central Gauteng Masters Athletics Championships held at Germiston Stadium recently.

These performances saw two new SA records improved upon in the hurdles’ heats and both these athletes improved on their previously set records.

Helena Fourie (70) improved the women’s shot put record with a throw of 8.51m.

Derek Sterley (71) improved on the men’s discus record with his throw of 41.12m.

Other good performances came from Chris Harmse (45) with a distance of 70m in the hammer throw, Linda van Vreden (33) with a throw of 47.75m in the javelin throw and Mariette Botha (35) with a winning height of 1.69m in the high jump.

From the North West, Charmain Barnard (green) led the 80m hurdles for women over 45, next to her, also from the North West, charging to the finish line in first place in the women’s 40 years old 80m is Christa Olivier. The women competed at the Central Gauteng Masters Athletics Championships held at Germiston Stadium recently.

Abraham Kaltamo, from local Diamond Athletics Club, dashed into second place in the men’s 36 years old 100m.

Harmse, van Vreden and Botha were selected to take part in the National Championships in an effort to launch the new development project, initiated by Athletics South Africa, SAMA and Central Gauteng Athletics, to recognise masters athletes as part of the bigger athletics family.

This project is intended to motivate senior athletes to participate at a different competitive level.
