Twenty-five speedsters arrested on Ekurhuleni’s roads over Easter

The EMPD High-Speed Unit was out on the roads over Easter weekend.

EMPD High-Speed Unit members were out in full force from last weekend targeting speedsters in hotspots on both the N3 and N12 highways.

Twenty-five drivers ended up behind bars for excessive speeding.

Seven drivers, aged between 21 and 56, were apprehended on Good Friday, between 10am and 4pm on the N12 eastbound near the R59 bridge.

They were caught doing speeds of 198, 188, 188, 176, 173, 170 and 161km/h in this 120km/h zone.

They were all males including a pastor who claimed he was late for a service and an SBV technician advancing the reason that he was rushing to fix an ATM.

The arrestees were locked up at the Alberton Police Station but released later after posting bail of R1 000 each.

They were expected to appear in the Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court soon.

The next day, April 20, between 6am and 10am on the N12 eastbound near the Atlas Road off-ramp which has the speed limit of 120km/h, two speedsters, a female and a male, aged 26 and 27, respectively, ended up behind bars for clocking 188 and 166km/h.

The pair was detained at the Boksburg North Police Station.

Later that day, between 10am and 12.30pm, on the R21 southbound, between North Rand Road and the N12 bridge, which is an 80km/h zone, five drivers were nabbed for excessive speeding.

They were caught doing speeds of 140, 134, 123, 120 and 114km/h.

The arrested drivers were all males, between the ages of 22 and 42, claiming that they were late for work.

After being charged for reckless and negligent driving at the Boksburg North Police Station, they were released on R1 000 bail each.

In the EMPD’s operation last Sunday five drivers were arrested on N3 highway, between the Geldenhuys Interchange and Rand Airport Road off-ramp, which is a 120km/h zone.

The arrested drivers, aged between 21 and 53, were clocked at 180, 174, 165, 162 and 162km/h.

Two were on motorcycles.

They were detained at the Germiston Police Station and later released on R1 000 bail each.

They were expected to appear in the Germiston Magistrate’s Court soon.

Six more speedsters were arrested on the same day on the N12 west and east, between Sam Green Bridge Road and the Edenvale Road turn-off which is a 120km/h zone.

The arrested drivers included a 45-year-old male on a Triumph motorbike who was clocked at 229km/h.

The rest, aged between 21 and 45, were clocked at 189, 179, 179, 176 and 167km/h.

They were charged with reckless and negligent driving at the Bedfordview Police Station and were released after posting bail of R1 000 each.

They were expected to appear in the Germiston Magistrate’s Court soon.
