Eagles wrap up successful season

Elsburg Eagles Cricket Club end the season on a high placing second in the Sunday Promotion League and third in the Sunday Directors League.

The Elsburg Eagles Cricket Club ended the 2018/2019 Easterns Cricket League on a high.

Easterns Cricket recently confirmed that the club placed second in the Sunday Promotion League and third in the Sunday Directors League.

“We were only two points behind the Promotion League winners Avion Cricket Club, who won with 59 league points,” explained Martiens Grobler, on behalf of the club.

“The Kempton Park based Avion won 12 of their 14 games.

“The two games they did lose they lost to us.”

Though the team was pleased with the results it is bittersweet as they won the league the previous year.

“It is somewhat heartbreaking for the team, but I can promise you that we will be back and ready to fight to reclaim the trophy next season,” said Grobler.

The club ended the Sunday Directors League third on the log, behind Bedfordview Cricket Club and Kempton Park Cricket Club.

“We are thrilled with this result especially after a long and difficult season for the Directors League team,” said Grobler.

“It is important to note that the team has moved up four leagues in the past three years and has been struggling with injuries throughout the season.

“On top of this, a number of players retired from the game.

“But still, with all this, we had a wonderful season.”

Though the season has come to an end for the club, two of its players, namely Phillip Crouse and Renier Wiesenar, were selected as part of the Easterns Cricket League T20 Team to compete in the Battle of the Roses Tournament.

“This is a yearly tournament hosted by the Easterns Cricket League,” explained Grobler.

“The tournament is only open to players who have been selected by Easterns.

“This is the first time players from our club have been selected for something like this.”

While the club enjoys some time off they are appealing to new players to come and join them for the new season, which will kick off in October.

“We look forward to growing and welcome all new and old members with open arms,” Grobler said.
