Birthday spoils for 101-year-old at GAFA

Protea Old Age Home throws wonderful tea party for Gabriel Esterhuizen, who reached a milestone birthday recently.

Gabriel Esterhuizen took much delight in celebrating his 101st birthday last Saturday at the Germiston Association for the Aged (GAFA) Protea Old Age Home.

At his age, Gabriel still drives himself around, maintains his bachelor flat at the home and performs some daily household duties, like cooking, all on his own.

Surrounded by loved ones, in awe of his capabilities at this age, Gabriel said his life was all in God’s hands and so he was the ultimate decider on how long he would live.

“I once heard of four Russians who lived to just over 120 years, and now that I am over 100, maybe that’s where I’m headed,” Gabriel joked.

“I thank the Creator every day for blessing me with this long life.”

Residents, friends and some family members showered Gabriel with gifts and love and helped him enjoy his birthday cake, a special treat donated by Pick n Pay Primrose.
