High visibility patrols continue to clean-up Germiston CBD

By-law infringers and illegal partygoers are the focus of special operations by the EMPD.

EMPD officers are continuing with periodic special operations in pre-identified locations in the Germiston CBD.

The focus is particularly on the streets around the Germiston Theatre where by-laws are being contravened by people and businesses setting up braai stands on pavements.

This leads to drinking in public with partygoers using the pavements and streets as toilets.

The special Friday evening operations in the area are aimed at curbing this conduct by removing the partygoers and confiscating the booze and braai stands.

EMPD members conducted stop-and-searches in the Germiston CBD, on Friday, as part of their special Friday evening operations.

Those intending to engage in illegal acts were dissuaded by having EMPD First Responder Unit (FRU) members and Germiston Precinct officers saturating the area.

Thirty-seven officers were involved in the operation and held roving roadblocks and roadside checks, the outcome of which saw 49 vehicles and 78 pedestrians stopped and searched.

Two unroadworthy vehicles were discontinued and one suspect arrested for possession of suspected stolen goods which included numerous SIM cards, tyres and rims.

The operation, which started at 5pm on Friday, had to be abandoned just after 7pm as the officers had to be diverted to Jerusalem informal settlement in Boksburg where protestors had barricaded Wit Deep Road, between Lower Boksburg and Main Reef roads.

The approximately 100 protestors were closely monitored and traffic diverted to safer roads until just before midnight.
