Evergreens bowl to fight cancer

Senior citizens took to Delville Germiston Bowling Club for a fun game of bowling to help change lives.

Eager to play, sporting hats and colour in their hair, the Evergreens took to the green at Delville Germiston Bowling Club to play for a difference.

The bowling team, comprising only senior citizens, under the organiser’s guidance, Christine Roberts, played rounds of bowling to raise funds for those living with cancer.

The event took place on Thursday.

The Evergreens, a local bowling team, convened for a fun bowling challenge on Thursday at Delville Germiston Bowling Club to raise funds for the Cancer Association of South Africa (Cansa).

“Every player paid to play, and purchased colourful strands of hair in their favourite colours representing their participation in the awareness campaign today,” said Christine cheerfully.

“All proceeds will be donated to the Cancer Association of South Africa (Cansa).

Betty Johnston and Roy Valentyn, the oldest participants turning 88 later this year, joined 18 others in making a difference to those affected by the illness.

“It is important for us to continue raising awareness on this issue because it is not like in the old days where only a few people were aware of the illness, or it was one out of many who had been diagnosed, and there was little help provided,” said Christine.

Ernie Buirdie hunkered down before bowling to reach the closest spot near the jack across the green.

“These days we all know of a person who is fighting cancer, a family member who has won the battle against it, or someone who has lost the battle against it.

“It is a terrible disease, however, if we continue working together to help, we can all make a difference.”

The Evergreens raised R920 for Cansa.
