Sixteen injured in train derailment at Elandsfontein Station

Once treated and stabilised all the patients were transported by various ambulance services to hospital for further treatment.

Netcare 911 responded to a reports of a train derailment at 4.19pm this afternoon (Tuesday) at the Elandsfontein Train Station.

“On arrival paramedics assessed the scene and found that three carriages of a train had derailed injuring sixteen patients,” said Shawn Herbst, media liaison officer for Netcare 911.

“All the injured were occupants of the train had sustained injuries ranging from minor to moderate.”

Once treated and stabilised all the patients were transported by various ambulance services to hospital for further treatment.

“The circumstances leading to the derailment are at this stage unknown, however rail authorities and SAPS are on scene,” said Herbst.

Lillian Mofokeng, senior manager: marketing and communication for Gauteng Metrorail, Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa confirmed the cause of the derailment is still unknown.

She further said, “Our priority at the moment is to attend to the commuters who were injured.

“We are also trying our best to ensure we recover the accident scene.

“There are trains moving through the station to and from Pretoria and Tembisa, however, there are delays of up to 40 minutes, as trains have to slowly approach and travel through the accident scene to ensure safety.

“We appeal to commuters to be patient with us.”
