Central Gauteng Athletics (CGA) hosted a successful CGA Youth and Junior Championships at Germiston Stadium last Sunday.

The event saw approximately 300 young athletes from across Gauteng competing for top honours.

The championship was also the final trial for youth and junior athletes hoping to be selected for the National Track and Field Youth and Junior Championships, which will be hosted by Athletics South Africa (ASA) in Paarl, from March 28 to 30.

“Overall the event went very well and we are positive that we will have a strong team heading to Paarl,” said Mandla Radebe on behalf of the CGA.

Radebe further stated that though no records were broken at the event, the level of performance from all the athletes was outstanding.

One of these outstanding performances was in the junior boys’ 400m sprint, when Lyhte Pillay won the race in 46.79 seconds.

“Another highlight of the day was the continued growth in long jump,” said Radebe.

“We once again had over 30 athletes taking part.

“This event has really grown as a result of great international performances by the likes of Luvo Manyongo.”

A number of athletes from Germiston’s local athletics clubs, namely Germiston Callies Harriers and Diamond Athletics Club, competed at the event.
