Ten alleged weekend speedsters arrested on Ekurhuleni’s roads

EMPD officers tackle speeding on Ekurhuleni’s roads.

The EMPD High-Speed Unit targeted the N3 southbound near the Rand Airport Road off-ramp, the N12 eastbound near the Atlas Road off-ramp in Boksburg, Van Wyk Louw Drive between Brink and Mikro roads in Boksburg, as well as Heidelberg and Dekema roads in Alrode, last weekend.

The operations were conducted between 8am and 11am on both the Saturday and Sunday.

On the N12 eastbound at 9.10am on the Saturday, a 26-year-old man driving a red VW Golf GTi, claiming he was rushing to a hospital, was caught doing 165km/h.

On the same day, between 9.50am and 1pm, along Van Wyk Louw Drive, between Brink and Mikro roads in Boksburg, three motorists, all males ranging in age between 30 and 33 in two sedans and one SUV, were arrested when caught doing speeds of 118, 106 and 100km/h on this 60km/h stretch of road.

The reasons advanced were either being late for work or rushing home.

The operation conducted on the Sunday, between 6am and 6.45am, netted five speedsters at the intersection of Heidelberg and Dekema roads in Alrode, which is a 70km/h zone.

The arrestees were males, aged between 26 and 49, driving sedans, who registered speeds of 133, 134, 120, 112 and 106km/h, who claimed they were rushing either to work or home.

On N3 southbound near the Rand Airport Road off-ramp at 8.46am on the Sunday, a 21-year-old male driver of a white Renault Clio was nabbed doing 170km/h, claiming that he was late for a church service.

The arrested drivers were charged with reckless and negligent driving and were expected to appear in the respective magistrate’s courts last Monday.
