Germiston suffer Super League defeat

Germiston City Football Club travelled to Alberton for their first match in the Eastern Local Football Association (ELFA) Super League.

The Eastern Local Football Association (ELFA) Super League kicked off last weekend and local team Germiston City Football Club were in action against Alberton Football Club in an away match.

“Matches against Alberton are always difficult for us, especially as the club is renowned for its hostile supporters,” said club chairperson Peter Oliver.

Germiston started the match with some good football, keeping Alberton in their own half for long spells and controlling the midfield.

“Against the run of play, Alberton broke through the Germiston defence and charged towards the goal, giving stand-in goalkeeper Chad Nel no chance,” said Oliver.

The club soon responded with an equalising goal from defender Carlo Buthelezi.

The teams headed into the half-time break tied 1-1.

In the second half, Germiston seemed to take a backseat.

“The team seemed to still be on the half-time break in the beginning stages of the second half,” said Oliver.

This laid back approach meant Alberton were able to keep the pressure on and soon, through a defensive error from Germiston, were awarded a free-kick from just outside Germiston’s goal area.

Though the Germiston wall did its job, Alberton were able to score from the rebound, bringing the score to 2-1 in the home team’s favour.

The visitors played their way back into the game, but try as they might they could not find the back of the Alberton net.

The match ended in a 2-1 victory for the home team.

“It was a disappointing start to the new super league season and there is much room for improvement,” said Oliver.

Germiston’s reserve team took on Alberton’s reserve team, in their first match of the season.

They were defeated 4-1.

This weekend Germiston will travel to Johannesburg to take on Linhill Celtic Football Club in their second super league fixture.
