Soon-to-be mommies and daddies prepare for the future

A successful pregnancy workshop is held at Life Roseacres Hospital.

The maternity ward at Life Roseacres Hospital held its Little Life Pregnancy and Baby Workshop, last Saturday, to show their support for Pregnancy Month.

Attendees of the event were treated to useful information, samples and gift bags packed with helpful baby essentials to assist in their near future.

Mommies-to-be were joined by their partners, who had a fair share of questions for the panel of experts.

The panel of experts featured Sandra Dibakoana, an enrolled nurse at Life Roseacres Hospital who taught guests how to bathe their bundle of joys, and Zita de Freitas from Baby Reflex who dealt with separation anxiety between mother and child.

“Start talking to your baby as soon as he/she is born,” said Zita.

“Keep the baby talk to a minimum, I know we cannot help it, but it is essential due to the fact that when our children grow up and start school, teachers will not tolerate non-existent words such as ‘birdie’ or ‘blankie’ when our children should instead be saying bird and blanket.”

Speaking on dietary requirements, dietician Anita Mostert said, “Pregnancy requires a dietary change.

“A healthy diet during pregnancy requires a high intake of protein, calcium and micro-nutrients and multivitamins formulated for pregnancy.”

She advised mothers to have an intake of 70 to 100 grams of protein a day, to drink two to three litres of water a day, to increase fibre intake and to limit sugary and fatty foods.

Other foods to be avoided include raw fish, smoked products and cheese with live cultures, such as blue cheese.
