Four seriously injured after alleged chemical explosion at Germiston business

Netcare 911 responded to an alleged chemical explosion on Tuesday.

Emergency services responded to reports of an alleged chemical explosion at a recycling facility in Germiston on Tuesday morning.

Shawn Herbst, media liaison officer for Netcare 911, said paramedics responded at about 8.08am.

“Reports from the scene indicated that four adult males sustained critical injuries, including extensive burn wounds, in what is believed to an aerosol container explosion,” Herbst said.

“The patients were treated on scene by advanced life support paramedics from Netcare 911 and another service.”
Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) were also on scene.

Two of the injured men were airlifted by Netcare 2, a specialised helicopter ambulance, and the two other seriously injured patients were transported by road ambulance to hospital for further treatment.

“The incident was well controlled by the in-house fire and safety crews,” said Herbst.

“The circumstances leading up to the explosion will be investigated by the SAPS, who were on scene.”

The GCN has contacted the business concerned and further information will follow when it becomes available.
