Getting to know SAVF Sonkruin

Management of SAVF Sonkruin Housing Scheme for the Elderly appeals to the community for donations.

SAVF Sonkruin Housing Scheme for the Elderly has been firmly rooted in Sunnyridge for 35 years.

Sonkruin offers subsidised housing for the elderly and they house 54 tenants in their 48 flats.

Eleven are for couples, 36 are bachelor apartments, and one is used as an office.

Though this branch does not offer the services found in old age homes such as on-site nursing staff, or frail care, they do offer the independent elderly clean and safe accommodation, including fun activities to keep them active.

Social workers visits include assessments of the overall state of the residents and they play mentally stimulating games, ensuring their physical and mental fitness.

“We understand that not everyone can afford to stay at an old age home, and that’s why we have this housing scheme,” said Adri du Toit, manager of Sonkruin.

“Our residents are still independent and we encourage them to remain integrated into community activities and to keep active.”

Sonkruin offers a variety of activities held during the year to raise much-needed funds to alleviate the financial strain experienced by some of their residents.

“With no government intervention, Sonkruin relies heavily on community participation in all our projects,” said Adri.

“We help everyone with their electricity units, and in order to subsidise their rent, we hold a number of raffles, junk sales, bazaars and bingo competitions to reach our financial goal.

“All proceeds go into maintaining the flats and the equipment we use daily.”

The organisation is appealing to residents to donate wool and knitting needles to help with its knitting projects this year.
