Junior paddlers take to the water

The Gauteng Canoe Union School League has started for the year.

Juniors from various schools, including schools from Germiston, participate in the regular canoeing school league races.

They earn points which are credited to their school, the club where they train and the individual and recognition for achievements throughout the year are given annually in November at the Gauteng Canoe Union School League prize-giving.

The juniors wear different coloured bibs to designate their different age groups.

The 2019 year kicked-off with sprint races at Wemmer Pan, last Sunday, as sprints is the Olympic discipline, and many of the juniors hope to participate in the Inter-provincial Inter-School Kayaking Sprint Competition which takes place in East London from March 21 to 23.

The first race for 2019 in the Gauteng Canoe Union School League saw junior paddlers testing their skills at Wemmer Pan, last Sunday.

The next school league race is scheduled to take place at Emmarentia Dam on February 3.

Races will also be held at Roodeplaat Dam on February 17, Florida Lake on April 14, Germiston Lake on May 26, and at East Rand Kayak (ERK) on July 28 with the finals to be hosted at ERK Homestead Dam on September 28.

The race age categories are from u-8 to 18 years of age.

Juniors can also earn points over a two-year period, in their age category, towards the awarding of Junior Gauteng colours for participation in the inter-provincial sprint and marathon events.
