Station commander shares festive safety tips

Keep safe as the festive season approaches, urges station commander.

“During the festive season everyone needs money, even those who are not employed, and they are willing to go the extra mile and commit crimes just to get something,” explained Primrose SAPS station commander Col Albertina Vesi when the GCN sat down with her on Wednesday.

“We have noted an increase in our trio crimes which include hijackings, business robberies and house robberies

“These are crimes where excessive force is used,” she said.

The station has also noted an increase in theft of motor vehicle and theft out of motor vehicle cases.

When asked what tips she can give the community Vesi said, “I encourage the community of Primrose to know their neighbours.

“Residents must also remain vigilant, especially when entering and leaving their properties, as this is where a large number of hijackings occur.

“Community members need to ensure their houses are burglar proofed and that when they are outside in the front or back yards that criminals cannot enter the house from the opposite side,” she said.

She further encouraged residents to have someone checking on their homes if they plan to leave Gauteng for the holidays.

“Have someone come and check on your home regularly, making sure all is in order and your post is collected out of the postbox,” she said.

She urged businesses to beef up their security heading into the festive season.

When it comes to theft of motor vehicles and theft out of motor vehicles, Vesi appealed to the community once again to not leave their valuables in their vehicles, especially in plain sight, and not to park their vehicles on the pavements and in secluded areas.

“Many people say they were only gone for five minutes but that is enough time for a criminal to strike,” she said.

“We wish the community a safe and happy festive season and prosperous New Year.”
