In the spirit of Ubuntu, companies give back to the needy

Mothers and children from Dukathole were treated to a jolly start to the festive season filled with much-needed baby product hampers.

The festive season is synonymous with the tradition of giving.

Keeping up with this tradition, Baby City, Lombard Insurance Company Limited and Interwaste identified deserving families in Dukathole to be the recipients of baby product hampers last Thursday.

Spirits were lifted as mothers and their bouncy babies filled the lapa area at Interwaste to collect the much-needed donations.

One-by-one guests collected their gifts and glimpses of smiles and laughter began to fill the air.

With the help of Sgt Olga Masethla, community liaison officer for the Ekurhuleni West Cluster SAPS, 60 families were identified and invited to a handover ceremony.

An array of items such as toys, baby wipes, baby carriers, blankets and nappies were donated.

Initially, the items were booked for safe destruction but after realising that all the products were still in good condition, and it was just slight damage to the packaging which made them unable to sell in stores, the idea to donate them to the needy was sparked.

“When the opportunity to donate the items instead of destroying them arose, it made perfect sense, as all the items are perfect to be used by anyone,” said Nigel Enticknap, general manager for Lombard Insurance Company Limited.

Mother and son, Ntombikayise Sibanyoni and Sifiso, marveled at their newly donated gifts.

Donation recipient Marthie Jeffries, who runs Deo Volente, a pre-school in Dukhatole, and has taken in a child who recently lost her mother to raise as her own, was grateful for the donations and said they would be a great help to her and her school during this season.

“I have worked with Interwaste in various social development cases focusing on the elderly in the surrounding communities, orphans and vulnerable children since 2014,” said Olga.

“Seeing people like Marthie benefit from these donations is heartwarming because she is selfless and constantly giving her time and assistance to families in the community.”

Senior marketing coordinator for Interwaste Natasha Willcocks joined the merriment and stated that it felt good giving during this time of the year, as it serves as both a reminder to be grateful and an inspiration to give back in the true spirit of Ubuntu.

“We love our community and we endeavour to help them in any way we can,” she added.
