Local club celebrates life and winning

After experiencing an agonising loss at the start of the Eastern Local Football Association (ELFA) league, the Elsburg Football Club made a surprising return to the top of the league’s log.

The Eastern Local Football Association (ELFA) league recently came to an end and for one local team, this was a season that required immense skill on the field and even more resilience to keep going after suffering a harsh loss.

Hlompo Seaga, who played for the Elsburg Football Club u-13 squad, lost his life just over two months into the new season when a terrible car crash claimed his life.

At the annual prize-giving event, hosted last Saturday, at the club’s home situated at the Local club celebrates life and winning, club members, referees, coaches and parents observed a moment of silence for the fallen star.

The Elsburg Football Club’s u-15 division got a special award and gold medals at the prize-giving for their awesome title as league champions in their division in the Eastern Local Football Association league.

The event also celebrated the players and honoured the best team of the year, which was the u-15 team, who finished in the top spot in their ELFA league this season.

“It is great seeing so many parents among us today. I can only hope to see you all on the grandstands supporting us at our games,” said Efnas Ndlovu, chairperson of the club.

“When players see their loved ones in the spectators’ section, they show off their skills and display entertaining football.”

The u-13 squad was divided into two groups this year due to an influx of players and division two finished in sixth place on the log and the u-17 squad finished in second place.

Frans Mashiteng who works as a janitor at the sports grounds was acknowledged for his humanity in caring for the boys and ensuring their safety whenever their transport or parents ran late in picking them up after games or practices.

Frans Mashiteng received a token of appreciation from parents and the Elsburg Football Club for his caretaker role in the club. He is congratulated by Efnas Ndlovu, chairperson of the club.

AmaChichi wase Tsietsi (Tsietsi Phase Five in Katlehong) clad in traditional isiZulu attire added entertainment and colour to the prize-giving.

“We may have experienced a painful loss at the start of the season but we finished strong and I am proud,” said Ndlovu.

“The support we’ve given each other and discipline we’ve required from one another continues to prove that we aren’t just grooming football stars but future leaders too.”
