New chapter for tennis club

The Ekurhuleni Tennis School of Excellence will introduce a study programme, on top of its normal training, to help children reach their goals on the court and in the classroom.

The Ekurhuleni Tennis School of Excellence, based in Delville, has committed itself to bettering the lives of its students and the community.

Though tennis training will remain the main objective of the school, which caters for six-year-olds to 60-year-olds, it has decided to introduce a maths and English enrichment programme.

“Some of the children who train with us regularly hardly have time for homework.

“This is why we decided to start the programme to help our students, from Grade Four to Eight, to excel not only on the court but in the classroom too,” said coach Loyiso Matsha.

“We hope to later enter the learners into maths competitions.”

Matsha believes that this is the first programme of its kind to be offered by a sports academy and is appealing to local maths and English teachers to get involved.

In addition to the academic programme the school will also be starting boxing fitness and table tennis classes.

“The fitness classes will be open for all ages and will assist our tennis players in developing their endurance, as well as footwork, which in the modern game of tennis is regarded as the seventh stroke,” said Matsha.

He further assured the community that boxing fitness is a non-combat sport that both men and women can enjoy.

Finally Matsha explained more about the introduction of table tennis at the school.

“Our table tennis classes will be open to all ages.

“We aim to enter into leagues when we are ready,” he said.

Interested parties are urged to register before November 30, with the classes starting on January 15, next year.
