Action-packed weekend for Germiston City Cricket Club

Germiston City Cricket Club continued their Easterns Cricket League season with several matches, this weekend.

The Germiston City Cricket Club had a busy weekend with four scheduled matches in the Easterns Cricket League.

The club competed in the Saturday First League and Fifth League and the Sunday Promotion League and Presidents League.

In the club’s first match of the weekend, they travelled to United Cricket Club’s home grounds for the Saturday First League.

Although the match was delayed by rain, the teams still managed to squeeze in 20 overs a side.

Germiston won the toss and elected to bat first and managed to post a target of 106 runs.

The match’s top batsmen were Anton van der Linde with 27 runs, Jan Aucamp with 18 runs, and Oswaldo de Souse with 15 runs.

The home team then took to the pitch and chased down the target, with the loss of only four wickets, giving United a six-wicket victory.

For their Saturday Fifth League match, the club travelled to Nigel to face the Nigel Cricket Club.

The home team won the toss and elected to field first.

Germiston managed to post a score of 115 runs in their time at the crease.

The day’s top batsmen were Wayne Parnell with 37 runs and Cyril Harmse with 22 runs.

Nigel were able to beat the target with the loss of only one wicket, securing them a nine-wicket victory.

“Although it was a huge defeat, the boys remain upbeat and are looking forward to the next game.

“They have taken what they learnt from this game and will put it into the next game this coming weekend,” said club chairperson David Ungerer.

The Sunday Promotion team travelled to Olifantsfontein for their fixture against Midrand Cricket Club.

Midrand won the toss and elected to field first, sending Germiston in to bat.

The visitors managed to knock up a score of 189 runs, in 42 overs, with a whirlwind display by Gert Flemix, who scored 46 runs off 28 balls.

He was supported by the match’s next top batsman Lee Wilson, who scored 39 runs.

The home team were only able to score 186 runs, giving Germiston a three-run win.

“It was an absolute nail-biter at the end with Midrand needing four runs from the last over.

“However, through impressive fielding and brilliant bowling they only managed to score one run,” said Ungerer.

The day’s top bowlers were Donald Cekiso with four wickets in seven overs for 26 runs and Johann Botha with two wickets.

“A well-deserved victory for our Promotion League side and also the club’s first win against Midrand in four years, across all the leagues.

“This side really is starting to gel well and I believe they are well on their way to being contenders for the top position in the league this year, although it is still early days,” said Ungerer.

The Sunday Presidents League match was moved to Germiston City Sports Club at the last minute after it was determined that Reiger Park Cricket Club’s ground would not be ready in time to field the match.

The match’s start was delayed which meant the game was restricted to 35 overs a side, instead of the normal 40 overs.

Germiston won the toss and elected to bat first, managing to knock up a score of 141 runs in their time at the crease.

The match’s top batsmen were Jadin Roux with 43 runs and Jan van Wyk with 32 runs.

“The boys showed resilience and character in the bowling and fielding departments, which made me as the coach very proud of them,” said Ungerer.

“A prime example was when Jonathan van der Westhuizentook his first wicket with the first ball of the innings.”

Reiger Park were bowled out for 110 runs, giving Germiston a 31-run victory.

The day’s top bowlers were van der Westhuizen with two wickets in seven overs for 29 runs, Cameron Ungerer with four wickets in seven overs for 32 runs and Anthon Rose and van Wyk with two wickets each.
