Athletes swim, cycle and run their way through Germiston

Athletes gave it their all in the Standard Bank 5150 Ekurhuleni Triathlon, on Sunday.

An icy wind whipped across Germiston Lake, on Sunday, as athletes prepared for the Standard Bank 5150 Ekurhuleni Triathlon.

The race was part of the iconic Ironman series, one of the world’s most challenging endurance races, and included a 1 500m swim, 40km cycling route and 10km run.

The race, which has taken place at the lake for several years now, was once again one to remember, with athletes starting off with a rolling start swim in the windy conditions which caused choppy waters, but the wind soon died down and the sun came out in full force as the racers took to the streets for the cycling and running sections of the race.

In the men’s race, Dylan Kruger started the race strong, putting in an early lead in the swim and coming out the water first in a time of 19 minutes eight seconds.

Following Kruger were Darian Wait and Sean Nel.

Not satisfied, Travis Johnston, who won last year’s race, proceeded to put the hammer down on the bike route pushing past Kruger to take the lead, followed closely by Adriaan Myburgh.

Through his incredible efforts on the bike, Johnston was able to extend his lead to well over two minutes and was able to control his race and looked comfortable while further extending his lead in the run.

It was ultimately Johnston’s day as he finished first, in a time of one hour, 54 minutes and 26 seconds, almost four minutes ahead of Myburgh and five minutes ahead of third place finisher Herculaas Jacobus Cronjé.

In the women’s race, Sylvia van Tromp finished the swim in the fastest time in 21 minutes 10 seconds, exiting the water first, with the leading men.

She was closely followed by Annah Watkinson.

Van Tromp started the bike with a reasonable lead but could not maintain the gap as Watkinson and Taneal Otto powered through the route, with Natalie Ross close on their heels and gaining ground on the bike.

Watkinson was able to cement her lead in the run and was the first woman over the finish line, in a time of two hours, nine minutes and four seconds, followed by Otto and Ross in third.
