Taylor pushes forward despite setback

Taylor Matthyser continues to challenge the community to make a difference in the lives of those fighting cancer.

While many 10-year-old girls focus on their favourite toy, school or spending time with their friends, Taylor Matthyser from Elspark is slowly making a difference in the community.

Taylor was just four years old when she first decided to grow her hair for Cansa, and her determination has not wavered in the years that followed.

The determined youngster, with the help of her family, hosted Taylor’s Cut4Cansa Challenge at the Elspark Sports Complex, last Saturday.

Gert Nieuwoudt, Jené Kotze, Tamara Wittstock (from Cansa) and Charlene Matthyser man the Cansa stand at Taylor’s Cut4Cansa Challenge, last Saturday.

Despite their best efforts, the family was left disappointed as hardly anyone arrived to show their support for the event.

“Unfortunately the day was very quiet and we decided to pack up early,” explained Charlene, Taylor’s mother.

“We did, however, have one ponytail donation and a woman, who is a cancer survivor, came to see Taylor to let her know that after reading about Taylor’s determination to help those with cancer she decided to grow her hair to donate.”

The family are now focusing on their next event, which is the Cansa Relay For Life, which will be held in Bedfordview on November 9 from 6pm until midnight.
