Butchery goes up in flames, cause of fire unknown

The cause of a fire which damaged Roots Butchery inside Chris Hani Mall over the weekend is still undetermined.

Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) promptly responded to Chris Hani Mall at around 9.57pm last Saturday following reports of a business fire.

Upon their arrival, DEMS members from the Vosloorus Fire Station established a scene property protection attack preventing the blaze from spreading from Roots Butchery into neighbouring shops.

According to William Ntladi, district manager media liaison for DEMS, the firewalls in between the shops played an important role in preventing the flames from spreading.

“Backup was received from Wadeville, Zonkizizwe and Alberton fire stations respectively.

“After the arrival of the backup stations, an offensive attack was initiated and the entire blaze inside the butchery was extinguished.

“The scene was declared over at about 8am the next morning,” said Ntladi.

No casualties were recorded on scene.

The cause of the fire is undetermined and still under investigation.
