UPDATE: Three-car pile-up leaves children injured

Eight children and one adult sustained minor to moderate injuries in a three-car pile-up caused by a recycling truck.

Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) from the Primrose Fire Station were dispatched to respond to a motor vehicle accident on the corner of Pretoria Road and Walnut Avenue in Primrose, at approximately 8.28am on Tuesday.

“Upon their arrival they found that a private refuse removal truck belonging to Remade Recycling had collided with a double cab bakkie which apparently was transporting children to a nursery school,” said Eric Maloka, acting media liaison manager for DEMS.

The left rear part of the bakkie was chopped off and the bakkie then collided with another vehicle that was in front it.

“According to information received on site, eight children, all with minor injuries, were transported by a private ambulance service, Emer-G-Med, to Sunshine Hospital and one adult who had sustained moderate injuries was transported to Bertha Gxowa Hospital,” said Maloka.

Maloka further stated that it is assumed that the truck was travelling at high speed and the scene was handed over to the EMPD for further investigation as to the cause of the accident.
