Woman’s online date allegedly attempts to rape her

The Primrose police apprehended a 33-year-old man and charged him with attempted rape.

The Primrose police recently arrested a 33-year-old man.

The man charged with attempted rape was arrested in Hazel Street, in Marlands.

The crime was reported to the Primrose police by the victim who explained that she had met the accused through social media and they had decided to meet in person.

“The complainant told officers that she took along her handbag containing toiletries, clothes, her cellphone, bank card and some cash,” explained Sgt Styles Maome, communications officer for the Primrose police.

“The pair took a taxi to Primrose and then walked towards Marlands.”

After walking for a long time the victim complained to the accused that she was getting tired.

“He assured her that they were close to their destination and suggested that they take a shortcut through some bushes,” said Maome.

Becoming suspicious the woman hesitated.

“It was then that the accused allegedly took out a knife, held it to the woman’s throat and told her he was going to rape her.

“He reportedly picked her up and began to carry her down the road,” said Maome.

The complainant told police that she managed to convince the accused that she was not going to run away.

“She asked if they could stop somewhere so she could use the bathroom.

“He agreed but took her possessions from her as an assurance that she would return,” Maome explained.

The woman was able to find some community members and told them her story.

They took her to the nearest garage where she then called her family using a spare cellphone she had hidden in her pocket.

“Her family brought her to the Primrose Police Station where she opened a case against the accused,” said Maome.

The man was arrested and held at the station pending his appearance in the Germiston Magistrate’s Court.

His case has since been postponed for plea and trial.
