De la Rey revs his way to the top

Malvern East resident and local superbike racer Peter de la Rey is on a high after winning the third and fourth rounds of the 2018 South African National Superbike Drag Racing Championships.

Malvern East resident and local superbike racer Peter de la Rey is revving his way to another title in the South African National Superbike Drag Racing Championships, after an outstanding performance in the competition’s third and fourth rounds.

The event was held at Killarney Raceway and saw de la Rey continue his climb up the leaderboard in the Superbike Class on his BMW S1000RR, sponsored by Bavarian Motorcycles.

“After round one and two, which were held in Port Elizabeth earlier this year, I managed to do a lot of development work on the bike, which really paid off.

“After practise I found a good set-up that worked well enough to put me in pole position in qualifying with a time of 9.60 seconds,” de la Rey explained.

Admitting the first round at Killarney Raceway was incredibly tough with everybody giving their all de la Rey is thrilled with his results.

“In the end I won against Nic Hendrics from Cape Town on a similar BMW S1000RR to mine.

“This win really gave me the push I needed and I was on a roll beating Devon Naidu, also on a BMW S1000RR, in the next round,” he said happily.

The two wins have left de la Rey on a firm footing heading into round five and six of the championships which will be held at Dezzi Raceway in Port Shepstone in November.

“I will be doing a bit more development in the meantime to prepare but it will be mainly for high altitude racing like up here in Gauteng.

“At sea level it is really quick and only takes a few runs just to acclimatise,” de la Rey explained.
