Focus, discipline, strategic thinking and concentration, are all the requirements necessary to play a game of chess.
The metro’s Library and Information Services continues to challenge both young and old residents to stretch their imaginations over a game of chess, and to equip them with skills to make them professional players by availing graded coaches to give them free chess classes.
The programme to develop chess players will run for a period of a year and will see learners from local schools and among all interested people empowered with critical thinking skills they can apply in their day-to-day experiences.
The metro and the local school organisations encourage members of the community to improve their chess skills.
Their objective is to develop players to become professional chess players, providing chess sets, clocks and notation books, and also to rope in highly rated local coaches.
The metro plans to host the first inter-library tournament in September with the participation of about 19 libraries and chess community organisations.

The municipality will continue to support regional chess tournaments so that ultimately the players qualify for national or international tournaments.
Also, the skills development programme is not only meant to assist participants to learn to stretch their imaginations and to improve their cognitive thinking abilities, but also to serve as a catalyst for positive change, creating job opportunities for local coaches.
The programme is supported through the metro’s Grant-In-Aid programme.
The coaching classes are free at the metro’s libraries, and Germiston residents can make use of the following coaches and coaching times:
• Katlehong: 011 999 1341/2: coach Lebohang Mphela, Wednesdays from 2pm to 4pm.
• Germiston: 011 999 0522: coach Clive Mthunzi, Mondays from 2pm to 4pm.
• Primrose: 011 999 0946/7: coach Brighton, Fridays from 2pm to 4pm.
• Leondale: 011 999 0508/1747: coach Brighton, Wednesdays 3pm to 5pm.
