More members beef up EMPD Equestrian Unit

Three new EMPD officers have joined the EMPD Equestrian Unit’s ranks.          

Three metro police officers recently became fully-fledged members of the EMPD Equestrian Unit following an intensive six-week basic course.

The officers underwent their training at Pro Equestrian based in Fairleads, Benoni.

Consts Juan Pierre Vorster, Goodness Nomkhosi and Velaphi Tshambane (all on horseback) with Petrus van Staden (director EMPD Specialised Services), Maxine Wright (instructor at Pro Equestrian), Gregg Nortjie (director of Pro Equestrian) and Supt Ronald Botha (unit commander of the EMPD Equestrian Unit) after the recruits final appraisal.

The three recruits gained their badges last Thursday at a ceremony held at the EMPD Equestrian Unit’s main office in Petit, Benoni.

The Equestrian Unit only had five members in 2005 but now has grown to a staff complement of 15, including three female members.

Director of Pro Equestrian Gregg Nortjie, Const Juan Pierre Vorster, Maxine Wright, an instructor at Pro Equestrian, Const Goodness Nomkhosi, Const Velaphi Tshambane, Petrus van Staden (director EMPD Specialised Services) and Supt Ronald Botha (unit commander of the EMPD Equestrian Unit), express appreciation after the new recruits received their certificates.

The Equestrian Unit forms part of the Specialised Units at the EMPD whose duties include patrolling designated areas on horseback, enforcing laws and providing crowd control to maintain public safety.

They may also be involved with other duties such as search and rescue, traffic control and the pursuit of suspects.
