Warning: Police won’t ask for money if your stolen vehicle is found

The Germiston SAPS are warning the community to be alert to criminals pretending to be police officers.

The Germiston SAPS are warning the community to be vigilant as people are masquerading as police officers.

“These people call our complainants who have had their vehicles stolen and tell them that their vehicles have been recovered.

“They then tell the complainant that they need to pay for their services at Shoprite or through eWallet,” said Const Maxwell Mabunda, communications officer for the Germiston SAPS.

“We, as the South African Police Service, will never ask the community to pay for our services using eWallet or at a retailer.”

Mabunda advised community members that if they receive such a call they should not pay any money but should rather visit their nearest police station to report the matter.

“We do not know where they are getting complainants’ information from, but should your car be stolen and then found an officer will call you and ask you to come to the police station.

“Never be tricked into paying money,” Mabunda said.
