Harcourts says no to violence against women and children

Local Harcourts franchise participates in Walk a Mile in Their Shoes march.

Harcourts Real Estate staff from franchises all over Gauteng got together at the Walter Sisulu Botanical Gardens recently for the annual Walk a Mile in Their Shoes march.

They marched one mile in an effort to raise funds and create awareness around the issue of violence against women and children.

Simon Smith, who is the business owner of Harcourts in Germiston and Boksburg, said that the idea for the event originated from colleagues in Australia.

“Due to the massive problem we have with violence in our communities, we decided to adopt the idea and have our own event in South Africa,” said Simon.

Harcourts Real Estate staff members show off their placards which they displayed during the Walk a Mile in Their Shoes march.

“The event takes the form of a protest march in which all the male staff are required to don high heel shoes and walk one mile, side by side, with our female colleagues as a show of solidarity with the victims of violent crimes in South Africa.

“About 100 Harcourts staff members battled through the bitterly cold day, and we were even faced with a few drops of rain and of course those dreaded blisters the men had to contend with.”

The event was a massive success and created lots of awareness about the issue.

“Through the fund-raising efforts of all the Harcourts staff in the region, we were able to raise

R166 000 which was donated to iDuc,” said Simon.

iDuc is a non-profit organisation based in Potchefstroom, but it works nationally in South Africa.

The organisation creates awareness and gives support to abused women and children in South Africa.

Smith said that he was very proud of everyone at Harcourts who were living the values of the company by putting people first and doing the right thing.

“Today we took a stance and made a statement that violence in any form, but particularly against women and children, is not acceptable,” he said.
