Trio Task Team aims to clean up Ekurhuleni West Cluster

The Ekurhuleni West Cluster SAPS Trio Task Team is working hard to combat crime.

The Ekurhuleni West Cluster SAPS Trio Task Team is hard at work bringing criminals to book.

The team, based at the Germiston Police Station, deals with business robbery, house robbery and hijacking cases.

The task team covers 12 police stations which make up the Ekurhuleni West Cluster and has 28 active investigating officers and three officers.

The GCN spoke to group leader Capt Ivan Els to discuss the task team’s recent successes on Thursday.

“Good investigation starts at the crime scene,” Els said.

“We have 240 cases which are active in court at the moment.”

In the last two weeks, the Trio Task Team has had good results with six cases achieving convictions.

“Convictions can take a long time to achieve as there are many elements involved, for example, the investigation, forensics, laboratory work and the court proceedings,” Els said.

These are the cases where successful convictions were achieved:

• A man was sentenced to six years in prison for a house robbery which took place in Gardenia Road, Primrose Hill in 2007. Three suspects entered the house and robbed it. One suspect was arrested in 2017 as he was identified by his fingerprints. He was sentenced on July 4 in the Germiston Regional Court.

• A woman appeared in the Vosloorus Magistrate’s court and was sentenced on June 26 to five years in prison for theft of a motor vehicle and perjury. She opened a case of house robbery and rape in November 2017. After investigations, it was established that she was lying. She had sold the vehicle belonging to her husband.

• A man was arrested in January 2018 on charges of business robbery and being in possession of an unlicensed firearm. He appeared in the Vosloorus Magistrate’s Court and has been sentenced to three years, suspended for five years for possession of an unlicensed firearm. The business robbery case is still ongoing.

• A suspect appeared in the Vosloorus Magistrate’s Court on a charge of house robbery and was sentenced to 15 years in prison.

• Two men were sentenced in the Palm Ridge Regional Court to 10 years in prison each for hijacking and possession of a hijacked vehicle. They hijacked the vehicle in Daveyton in March 2009 and the vehicle was recovered in Vosloorus in the same year.
