Show promises nostalgia and great music

The Midnight Train to Motown heads for Carnival City’s Mardi Gras Theatre.

A vibrant cast of performers will transform the Mardi Gras Theatre into the heartbeat of American pop music and pay tribute to multi-platinum greats from the past who knew no rivals.

Filled to the brim with nostalgia, but with the feeling that you are truly in their presence, this tribute show, featuring Cape Town’s Great Pretenders, celebrates the likes of Diana Ross and The Supremes, Four Tops, Gladys Knight, Temptations, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Luther Vandross, Smokey Robinson and other evergreen artists.

Renowned and acclaimed impresario Jayson King (73) has taken this production all over South Africa during the past 25 years, making it one of the most notable musical tribute shows in the country spanning from the 1960s to now.

Lead singer and vocal powerhouse of the show Ruth Knight will belt out the vocal stylings of Natalie Cole, Gladys Knight and Gloria Gaynor, backed by Port Elizabeth singer Charmaine Allisson, a Tina Turner look-alike and sound-alike who brings the Queen of Rock to life on stage.

King acts as host/MC, introducing some of Elvis Presley’s and Wilson Pickett’s soul and rock ’n roll hits – some great inspiration to Motown recording artists back in the day.

The Great Pretenders have been seen on a number of television shows and can now be enjoyed live at Carnival City.

“This is definitely an exciting show for us and we are thrilled to be offering our guests entertainment of this calibre,” said Michelle Smith, the marketing manager for Carnival City.

So get your friends and family together and make your way to Carnival City for a show you’ll never forget.

The shows take place at 8pm on both evenings.
