Local crèche introduces working dogs to learners

To celebrate Pet Week, Earth Kidz Crèche and Youth Centre invited Bidvest Protea Coin K9 Unit to their school to learn more about different working dogs.

Bidvest Protea Coin K9 Unit (Pomona branch) visited Earth Kidz Crèche and Youth Centre in Primrose on Wednesday in light of the school’s Pet Week educational campaign.

“Most of our children know dogs only as pets.

“The K9 Unit visiting us during Pet Week introduced our children to working dogs and taught them about the various talents our house pets possess,” said Angela Hicklin, principal of Earth Kidz Crèche and Youth Centre.

The Bidvest Protea Coin K9 Unit specialises in cargo screening at airports and warehouses and has a range of working dogs providing different services such as sniffer dogs, patrol dogs and attack dogs.

“Our sniffer dogs aren’t trained to bite or scratch packages as that can trigger explosives to erupt.

“We have a positive-run and a negative-run to indicate the existence of explosives in a package.

“If there are explosives in a package, the dog will sit up and we’ll reward it with a ball, that’s a positive-run.

“On a negative-run it will not sit down as nothing will have been detected,” said Lorraine Claassen, operations clerk at Bidvest Protea Coin K9 Unit.

The K9 Unit dogs are not trained to sniff out flammables such as petrol, liquids or other hazardous substances that can impair the dog’s sense of smell.
