Two nabbed for business robbery

A shopkeeper’s call for help led to a high-speed chase in which two suspects were arrested.

Two suspects were apprehended for business robbery recently after a high-speed chase came to a halt in van Riebeeck Street in Elsburg.

The two men, aged between 27 and 34, were allegedly part of a four-man group which entered a shop on Voortrekker Street under the disguise of wanting to purchase energy drinks.

According to the victim, the men pretended they were going to get money from the car when they suddenly pulled out their firearms, pointed them at her and pushed her behind the counter while instructing her to give them cigarettes and the money in the cash register.

The suspects managed to run out of the shop with cigarettes and cash.

The victim followed suit and began screaming for help, and through police visibility in the area, the victim’s call for help was heeded by police officers who rushed to her aid, obtained the description of the suspects and went on a high-speed chase in which two of the suspects were caught and arrested in van Riebeeck Street.

“The suspects were found in possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition and different brands of cigarettes.

“They are due to appear in the Germiston Magistrate’s Court soon to face charges of business robbery and possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition,” said Const Daphney Phooko, communications officer for the Elsburg SAPS.
