Tough weekend for Simmer

Germiston Simmer Rugby Club faced Alberton Rugby Club in a captivating match last Saturday.

Germiston Simmer Rugby Club suffered a major upset on May 12, when they welcomed the Alberton Rugby Club to their home turf, the Germiston Stadium, in the Pirates Grand Challenge under the Golden Lions Rugby Union.

In the first minutes of the game, both teams were light on the attack. Both were still trying to figure out each other’s game plan, although their zealous energies were palpable.

Simmer struck first after a mistake from Alberton’s scrum half, but their joy was short-lived as Alberton levelled the score soon after the restart.

Although Simmer had possession in the first phase and began dominating the game, they did not convert the pressure into a scoreboard point.

Lack of concentration from Simmer saw Alberton score two quick tries and end the first half with a 21-7 lead.

“We could have easily scored three more tries before half-time if the decision making on the field had been better,” said Rene Audier, the club’s president.

The second half kicked off at a slow pace, which picked up when Simmer tried to pierce through Alberton’s defence, but they held a tight defensive line and bravely stopped a couple of aggressive attacking plays.

Simmer were thrown off their game plan with little to no time to come up with a new strategy as Alberton took advantage of their lacking forwards and headed directly to their defence, running, pushing and adding to their scoreboard for the entire second half.

The home team suffered a 42-10 defeat.

“We have a hard week ahead of us on the field to practise and rectify the mistakes we made in this game,” said Audier.
