Nurses at Bertha Gxowa picket during their lunch hour

It’s tools down during lunch at Bertha Gxowa Hospital until salary increases and incentive bonuses are renegotiated.

Following unmet salary requests, nurses at Bertha Gxowa Hospital, together with members from the Democratic Nursing Organisation of South Africa (Denosa) and the National Health, Education and Allied Workers Union (Nehawu), have taken to picketing every day during their lunch hours between noon and 2pm.

The picketing started on May 2.

During picketing hours, ambulances and private cars are not permitted to enter or leave the hospital.

“We are picketing due to the outcome of our incentive bonuses and negotiations on our annual salary increases.

“We are not on strike; we only do this during our lunch hours,” said Nehawu leaders outside Bertha Gxowa Hospital on Wednesday.

The GCN requested comment from the hospital, the unions and the Gauteng Department of Health but none was forthcoming at the time of going to press.
