EMPD officers arrested after soliciting bribes in Katlehong

Two metro police officers will be charged with corruption and extortion after truck driver blows whistle on them.

A truck driver was stopped by two male EMPD officers in full uniform driving a marked vehicle last Friday afternoon.

He was pulled over at about 2pm at the intersection of Khotso and Hospital roads in Katlehong. The truck driver alleged that the officers claimed that the documentation he produced was not in order and demanded a bribe of R1 000 to let him go free.

The driver contacted the EMPD Internal Affairs Unit who in turn informed members of the Hawks.

A location for the delivery of the bribe was agreed upon and the two officers were arrested around 4.40pm.

The two arrested officers are stationed at the Alberton precinct and their Friday shift commenced at 6am and ended at 2pm.

“They decided to go beyond their area after their knock-off time to solicit bribes,” said chief superintendent Wilfred Kgasago, the spokesperson for the EMPD.

“Marked notes amounting to the solicited R1 000 were handed to the officers by the driver at the agreed location in Katlehong.

“Immediately thereafter, the two metro police officers were stopped and the marked notes were seized.

“They were handcuffed and detained at the Katlehong North Police Station.”

The arrested officers, who are both in their late 30s, will face charges of corruption and extortion.

They were due to appear in the Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court on Monday for a bail application.
