VLC paddlers show their river-racing skills
VLC paddlers were a force to be reckoned with in a recent river race.
Members of the Victoria Lake Canoe Club (VLC) based at Germiston Lake were out in full force, on Saturday, for the first river race of the new racing season which kicked off recently.
And the paddlers had a very good race.
The winner was Richard Cele, a coach at VLC and the club’s top paddler, with numerous Dusi and Non-Stop Dusi medals to his credit, who finished in a time of 1:31:30.
He was just two ticks ahead of Loveday Zondi from the Soweto Canoe Club, who came in second.
Mark Handley from VLC was the third finisher (he competes in the masters age category – 50 years and older).
Handley chased Cele and Zondi all the way and finished in a time of 1:35:00.
VLC’s Katiso Hlahatsi was the fourth K1 paddler to cross the finish line, less than a minute later.
The race took place from Henley on Klip to Meyerton, over a distance of 22km, in pleasant, sunny autumn conditions with a good water level.
It was organised by the North West University Club campus in Vanderbijlpark, known as the WatUni Canoe Club, and sponsored by Akzonobel.
