Simmer tackle their way to victory

Germiston Simmer Rugby Club dominated their Pirates Grand Challenge fixture against the Krugersdorp Harlequins Rugby Club this weekend.

Germiston Simmer Rugby Club was excited to host Krugersdorp Harlequins Rugby Club in their first home match of the Pirates Grand Challenge, which falls under the Golden Lions Rugby Union.

The match was played at Simmer’s home grounds at the Germiston Stadium on Saturday, with a number of supporters lining the field.

The game got off to a sloppy start for Simmer as players struggled to find one another, with a number of catches being missed, leaving players scrambling to gain possession of the ball.

After the opening 10 minutes, however, it seemed the team’s nerves settled, and following the example of skipper Charl Wright, the team were able to inch past the Harlequins’ defence to get the first points of the match on the scoreboard.

After restart was not fielded the Harlequins hit back hard and scored a try of their own.

This left the home team a little rattled and they struggled to find their game plan, which the visiting team took full advantage, increasing their lead to 19-7.

Through some trial and error Simmer was able to find their feet and the forwards started to dominate the scrums and lineouts which led to two quick tries leading into half-time.

All tied up at half-time Simmer’s coach Maree Bester had some harsh words with his team before they headed back onto the field.

The pep-talk seemed to do the trick and the players came to life, playing their hearts out and putting their best foot forward.

Soon Simmer started to play the game the coach wanted and scored at will.

The new-found energy secured a 48-19 win for Simmer.

Man of the match awards were awarded to Eben Barnard and Kyle Moorcroft.

The team will next host the Alberton Rugby Club at the Germiston Stadium, on Saturday.

The second and u-21 teams will kick-off their matches at 2.40pm, with the first team taking to the field at 4pm.

The community is encouraged to come and support the home team.
