Triathlon and duathlon action hits the streets of Germiston

Athletes, young and old, from beginners to professionals, tested their skills at the Trinity Sports triathlon and duathlon, this Sunday.

Though sunshine shone off Germiston Lake on Sunday morning, the water was icy, another obstacle that competitors, both young and old, had to tackle in the final Trinity Sports triathlon and duathlon.

The race was the third and final in the three-part series, which began in November, last year.

It also formed part of the Central Gauteng Triathlon (CGT) Championships and the CGT Duathlon Championships.

The series has offered athletes – from beginners to professionals of all ages – a chance to race and is used as a selection tool for the CGT Triathlon provincial team.

Sunday’s event was once again split into four age divisions, namely young ones (eight to nine years old), children (10 to 11 years old), juniors (12 to 19 years old) and seniors (20 years and older), and has both standard and sprint distances.

The standard triathlon began in the water with a swim of 1.5km, with many racers pulling out and being brought to shore by the lifeguards as the cold proved too much for them.

Competitors then hit the streets of Germiston for a 40km cycle route and ended the event with a 10km run.

Sean Nel was the overall winner, finishing in a time of two hours, seven minutes and 51 seconds.

He was closely followed by André Bekker, in a time of two hours, 11 minutes and 57 seconds, with Robbie Gien rounding off the podium finishes in a time of two hours, 15 minutes and 14 seconds.

Katherine Ortlieb came first in the women’s race in a time of two hours, 15 minutes and 22 seconds.

She was followed by Lizanne Mackenzie, who finished in a time of two hours, 24 minutes and 43 seconds, with Jessica Wolhunter rounding off the women’s podium finishes in a time of two hours, 33 minutes and 16 seconds.
