100 Cycle Challenge to take to Germiston’s streets

There will be full road closure for the 100 Cycle Challenge starting and finishing in Germiston.

The organisers of the 100 Cycle Challenge have announced that there will be full road closure for their inaugural race on May 6 in Germiston.

Full road closure means road safety for the multitude of road cyclists who have entered the race with traffic being diverted away from the race route to alternative roads.

Ekurhuleni, the host city of the race, confirmed full logistical support.

The 100km route starts and ends at Germiston Lake.

Gauteng’s newest road race is a stunner.

It’s 100 per cent safe, fast and flat.

And it introduces an exhilarating 100km challenge to Gauteng’s cycling calendar during the autumn season.

Open to South Africa’s dedicated weekend riders and amateurs, as well as the pros, the road race is a Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI)-accredited event that allows u-23 professional male and female road cyclists to add points to their 2018 world championship standing.

The 100 Cycle Challenge forms part of the more than 30 road cycling events that make up the UCI Africa Tour, which visits nine countries on the continent throughout the road racing season and provides excellent top level competition for the continent’s national teams.

To be presented annually on the first Sunday in May in Gauteng, the long-term vision is to develop the 100 Cycle Challenge into one of the biggest cycle races in South Africa and the world.

The 100 Cycle Challenge acts as a permanent partner to Race The Future, an ambitious development plan sanctioned by Cycling South Africa to transform the sport of cycling at grassroots level.

The main drivers of the plan are:

• Identifying young cycling talent in communities across South Africa.

• Facilitating career training and development.

• Fostering entrepreneurship and job creation through the sport of cycling.

• Introducing the sport to new target audiences in communities that are, up to now, not familiar with cycling.

The 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, UK and the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, France provide great benchmarks to work towards – Race The Future aims to produce new champions to represent South Africa at these prestigious global events.

Eventually, the aim is to identify 25 active cycling academies in South Africa that will be supported and brought in under the Race The Future umbrella.

They have started with four in Gauteng in year one.

The 100 Cycle Challenge has invited charities and their supporters to utilise the race as a platform to raise funds – participating charities are listed at www.100cyclechallenge.co.za.

The race also supports and endorses Support SA Talent, an initiative aimed at raising funds to enable South Africa’s top road racing teams to travel to and participate in national and international events.

The deadline for online entries at www.100cyclechallenge.co.za is May 2.

Late entries and race number collection are from 10am to 5pm at:

• Cycle Lab Lynnwood on May 3.

• Cycle Lab Fourways on May 4.

• Cycle Lab Boksburg on May 5.

Cyclists who enter between April 16 and May 5 will not be seeded for the race.

Robyn Thekiso, spokesperson of the 100 Cycle Challenge said, “If we never challenge ourselves, we will never know how far we can go.

“That was the inspiration behind the development of one of South Africa’s newest road races.

“We’ve been motivated by the warm welcome the 100 Cycle Challenge has received from many businesses, organisations and individuals, particularly South Africa’s road cyclists.

“Starting something new in a well-established sports and lifestyle sector is never easy, but we strongly believe that cycling provides an excellent platform, not only for avid cyclists but for the growth and development of future talent.

“Race The Future, which aims to nurture cycling’s future stars, receives R50 from each entry.

“We’re extremely proud of and grateful to our sponsors and supporters.”
