Master athletes show us how it’s done

Germiston Stadium played host to the Central Gauteng Masters Championships last Saturday.

The Germiston Stadium was abuzz with activity last Saturday when master athletes took to the field for the Central Gauteng Masters Athletics Championships.

Athletes, many of whom are ranked top masters in the world, from the Central Gauteng, Gauteng North, Free State, Central North West, North West North, Vaal Triangle, KZN and South Western districts came together for the championships.

One of the event’s highlights was the appearance of three Olympian greats, Shaun Bownes (47), Willem Coertzen (35) and Burger Lambrechts (45).

The trio graced the track and field. Bownes and Coertzen, participating in two different age groups in the 110m hurdles, saw their wins placing them both first in the World Masters Rankings for 2018.

Bownes, who competed in the 45- to 49-year-old event, won his race in 14.51 seconds, and Coertzen, who competed in the 35- to 39-year-old event, won his race in 13.92 seconds.

Bownes later competed in the 100m sprint, in the 45-49 year old age group, winning in a time of 11.56 seconds.

Burger Lambrechts shone in the shot-put circle during the championships, tossing the shot-put an impressive 17.88m to better the South African record in his age group by more than two metres.

Many of the Central Gauteng athletes performed well in their chosen disciplines. Some of their results were:

• Clinton Vermeulen came fourth in the men’s 45 years 100m sprint in a time of 12.70 seconds.

• Tinus Pienaar came fifth in the men’s 45 years 100m sprint in a time of 13.70 seconds.

• Ian Hacker came first in the men’s 50 years 100m sprint in a time of 12.13 seconds.

• Riaan van Niekerk came second in the men’s 50 years 100m sprint in a time of 12.90 seconds.

• Peet Grové came first in the men’s 60 years high jump with a 1.37m jump.

• Linda van Vreden came third in the women’s 30 years shot-put with a distance of 10.68m.

The event was enjoyed by all who attended, with a sense of peace and camaraderie filling the stadium.
