Germiston beaten to the punch by visiting Zwide

Germiston City Football Club suffer a loss in the Eastern Local Football Association’s (ELFA) Super League against Katlehong-based club Zwide Football Club.

After a good start to the season, the Germiston City Football Club were feeling good as they headed into their Eastern Local Football Association’s (ELFA) Super League home fixture, last Saturday.

The club hosted Katlehong based club Zwide Football Club in the match at the Germiston City Sports Club.

It was clear from the first whistle that all the momentum the club had going into the match had disappeared and the players seemed to struggle to gain field against the visiting team.

When Germiston did have their chance with the ball they were unable to find the back of the net before the end of the first half.

“There could have been two goals before half-time if the boys were able to convert their chances into goals,” said club chairperson Peter Olivier.

With reignited determination, Zwide was rewarded with the first goal of the match, early in the second half, after some good football and some mistakes from the Germiston defence.

The visitors continued to apply the pressure on the Germiston defence and soon extended their lead to 2-0.

This seemed to be the wake-up call that Germiston needed, who began to play some good football and were soon rewarded with a goal by Sifiso Maseko in the 85th minute.

This goal spurred the home team on and they dug in deep searching for an equaliser before the final whistle was blown.

Germiston’s reserve side had better luck on the field winning their match 4-3 with goals from Zkgare Dikledi, Mulusi Dlamini and Thabiso Nkosi.

In this weekend’s fixtures, the club travelled to Kempton Park to face the Kempton Park Football Club.

The first team were defeated 4-0, placing them eighth on the log, while the reserves were defeated 2-0 placing them fourth on the log.

The club will take on Benoni Northerns Football Club in a home match this weekend.
