FUNtastic day at the flying rally

Rand Airport held a flying rally gathering pilots, co-pilots and the community over the Easter weekend.

Whether you were the enthusiastic future pilot of the family, crafty sister, mom the diary collector, dad the biltong connoisseur or just the little ones who wanted to run around, Rand Airport’s Easter Flying Fun Day, which was held last Saturday, was the place for you.

Gates opened at 8.30am and those participating in the flying rally soon took their positions and were air bound.

The kid’s zone kept children entertained with go-carts, jumping castles and waterworks, while parents and guardians had peace of mind to check out the crafts market.

Attendees also had the opportunity to enjoy a guided tour of a 71-year-old Douglas DC-4 Skymaster aeroplane, originally from Santa Monica, which was then transported to South Africa in 1946 where it was named Oteniqua.

Pilots and co-pilots all gathered at 1pm as Rob Junker, the rally organiser, was ready to announce the winners.

Mark Clulow and Eugene Schneider came in third place, Shane Britz and Karen Stroud came in second, and the winners of the flying rally were Frank and Cally Eckard.

“We had over 100 children this year and that is a great turnout seeing that this was only our second year of organising this rally. Everything has doubled in comparison to last year. Next year we’ll have bands and a few other surprises,” said Carol Olivier, the event organiser.
