Heavy rains cause ‘sinkhole’ in Makause
Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) responded to a ‘sinkhole’ in Makause amid heavy rainfall.
The continuous heavy rain residents of Ekurhuleni have been experiencing in the past three days has badly affected many communities in the metro, Makause informal settlement being one of them.
Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) responded to a call to investigate a ‘sinkhole’ in the area yesterday afternoon.

“We visited the area yesterday afternoon and we identified a hole in the area, but it is not a sinkhole.
“Six shacks situated near the hole were mildly affected by the shift, but residents of those shacks refused to be relocated to a place of safety yesterday.
“However, we have organised a team from the department who will speak to the residents and explain the importance of the move to them,” said William Ntladi, the district manager media liaison for DEMS.

According to Ntladi, Makause is known to have been a mining ground years ago.
They are still investigating the size of the hole and the damage it caused.
DEMS has been checking in on the community and monitoring its safety since yesterday.
