DEMS warns communities to be on alert in wet weather

Take extra precautions in the wet weather.

Following consistent downpours across Ekurhuleni since last night and with the expectation of the rain lasting until tomorrow, Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services Department (DEMS) warns residents, industrial and business communities to be extra cautious of flooding especially those in flood prone and low-lying areas.

“So far, the ground is becoming saturated and subsequent to that, any small amount of rainfall has the possibility of leading to flooding which might impact negatively on motorists and residents in the low-lying areas,” said William Ntladi, district manager media liaison for DEMS.

DEMS in collaboration with the South African Weather Service (SAWS) cautions residents, drivers and everyone else to be on high alert throughout the rainy period.

People should avoid crossing low lying bridges and swollen streams where water is above ankle level.

Parents are urged to keep a close eye on their children especially those crossing streams.

Children may not make correct decisions when faced with flooded areas.

In such cases, drowning could occur.

Motorists are urged to be careful when approaching low lying bridges or where the road surface is submerged under water.
