Germiston edge Boksburg FC 2-1 in thriller match

An entertaining clash between Germiston City Football Club and Boksburg Football Club in the Easterns Local Football Associations (ELFA) Super League at the Germiston City Sports Grounds.

A drizzly morning could not get the pitch wet enough to stop the Easterns Local Football Association’s (ELFA) Super League from taking place last Saturday at the Germiston City Sports Grounds, where Germiston City Football Club hosted Boksburg Football Club in a gripping match.

The starting 11 from each team took formation on the pitch and right after the referee’s whistle blew Boksburg dominated with a strong attack from the strikers by taking three shots at goal that Germiston City defenders were able to quickly ward off.

Ten minutes into the game a counterattack by Germiston propelled lead striker Samuel Jack into finding the back of the net, sending Boksburg goalie Kabelo Maruping into a purposeless dive, unable to save the ball.

Goalkeeper Kabelo Maruping failed to stop Germiston’s Samuel Jack from scoring the first goal of the game.

Boksburg quickly countered and attempted to find the back of the net, an attempt which suffered greatly in comparison to their rivals, but it afforded them a corner.

Although Boksburg had a goalless first half, their dominating streak continued in the second half.

Following a changed game plan communicated by coach Sreten Pavlovic during halftime, Mduduzi Mkhatshwa of Germiston City kicked and headed the ball around with ease and flair, not only entertaining spectators, but also assisting his team’s strikers to apply pressure on the Boksburg defence by ensuring the ball stayed on their side of the field.

The plan worked blissfully because, after four missed shots on target from Germiston, Jeffrey Modise found the back of the net just after the 70-minute mark from 20 yards, making the score 2-0.

Boksburg, however, capitalised when they were given a penalty following careless play from the Germiston defenders.

“Our defenders lost concentration towards the end of the game and we gave away a penalty, making the final score 2-1.

“I am happy with three points as that will help us on the log but I think we need to work on how we finish our games.

“We need to finish with the same energy we start off with,” said Pavlovic.

The reserve team had a considerable win in their clash against Boksburg, a match Pavlovic was proud to watch.

“We are still a work-in-progress team but the competitiveness is intense and that’s what I like.

“We’re working on reaching the targets we’ve set out to be in the top eight,” said Pavlovic.

Manny dos Santos scored two goals in the first half, Sinethemba Manqele scored one goal and Melusi Dlamini capitalised by scoring the winning goal, ending the match 4-3 in Germiston’s favour.

Germiston City Football Club is still looking to add three players to their first team and get more sponsorship.
