ALERT: City to come to a stand-still as Ekurhuleni Taxi Industry to stage protest march to the mayor’s office in Germiston tomorrow

Bus services to be suspended tomorrow (Tuesday) as a precautionary measure - says metro.

The Ekurhuleni Taxi Industry (ETI) under the Ekurhuleni leadership of the South African National Taxi Council (Santaco) and the National Taxi Alliance (NTA) will stage a protest march to the offices of the executive mayor and the speaker of council of the metro in Germiston tomorrow (Tuesday).

The march will start at the Germiston Taxi Rank at 10am and proceed to the Germiston Civic Centre.

The ETI will present a memorandum of demands in relation to the roll-out of the Harambee Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) System.

Due to this anticipated protest, which will take place throughout Ekurhuleni, the metro has decided to suspend bus services for the day, as a precautionary measure – following a threat of violence.

“Commuters are encouraged to seek alternative modes of transport for tomorrow.

“We do apologise for the inconvenience caused and thank you for your understanding,” said spokesman for the metro Themba Gadebe.

The bus services will be fully operational from Thursday, March 22.

“Commuters will be compensated with a free ride for a lost day,” said Gadebe.

In a statement, the ETI said, “As the ETI, we are 100 per cent behind the Harambee BRT system. However, we are of the view that the City of Ekurhuleni under the leadership of the current executive mayor, Clr Mzwandile Masina, allows the Harambee BRT project to suffer a lot of delays that are negatively affecting the roll-out of the project and thereby denying the citizens of Ekurhuleni a better public transport service that is designed to transform the public transport network and support the economy of South Africa.

“Our primary aim for this protest march is that both the executive mayor and the city manager should be removed from their positions with immediate effect.”
