Katlehong bred, big city bound

This Katlehong-bred artist has set her sights on the razzmatazz of showbiz and is ready for take-off.

Twenty-year-old Noluthando ‘Sassy Tee’ Themba, from Katlehong, is ready to take on showbiz and perform among South African musical greats while still upholding her principals.

Every artist usually has a backstory of how they came up with their stage name and it is usually hard choosing a name that will stick, but for Noluthando this proved to be an easy task.

“My family calls me Sesi (Sepedi word for sister), I just changed it to ‘Sassy’ and spelt the ‘T’ from my surname as ‘Tee’, and now I’m Sassy Tee,” said Noluthando.

Noluthando, who grew up musically inclined, made the conscious decision to focus her energy into creating music following the release of her single titled Never stop (never give up) last year, after seeing it get as much local recognition as it did.

“When I saw my song inspire people, mainly those who had no hope and had already given up on their dreams, I realised that this new age style I was working on allowed people from different backgrounds to jam to my music,” said Noluthando.

Inspired by hip-hop, house music and R&B, Noluthando hopes to one day work with musical maestro DJ Maphorisa and songstress Lady Zamar who are both successful in their respective genres.

Like many who venture into showbiz, Noluthando learned quickly that many producers and artists would only push her music or feature her if she returned the favour in romantic dates or relationships with the ‘powerful’ people who could back up her musical journey.

“The greatest challenge I am facing is that every time people want to help me with my music career, they always want something in return, like dates or relationships,” said Noluthando.

“I am currently working on my latest single and I will be hosting a Birthday Experience with DJ Mshega and other local artists from my neighbourhood at Cheche’s in Katlehong on April 7.”
